Bells
Animal Crossing
In Path of Exile 2 Dawn of the Hunt league, the Tame Beast skill allows players to turn rare beast-type enemies into powerful companions with a variety of utility effects, auras, and even offensive capabilities. Today, we are going to talk about how the tame beast system works, the best companion modifiers to look for, and how to efficiently farm for your ideal beast.
To begin using Tame Beast, you’ll need to obtain an Uncut Skill Gem and convert it into the Tame Beast gem. This is typically found around Act 3. Once equipped and placed on your skill bar, the gem allows you to target and capture rare beast-type monsters.
Capturing a beast requires the use of the Hinder effect. You must hinder the rare beast and kill it while the effect is still active. If done correctly, the gem will absorb the beast and convert into a Companion Gem, permanently retaining the beast’s auras, abilities, and modifiers.
The gem becomes a spirit reservation skill, similar to an aura, and can be used across all characters in the same league. You can only have one active companion at a time, but you’re free to capture new beasts by cutting new Uncut Gems. Need help capturing the perfect beast faster? Two of the most effective support gems for companions are:
Last Gasp: Keeps your beast alive for 4 seconds after it reaches 0 HP. This syncs well with the 5-second revive timer, leaving only about a 1-second downtime.
Loyalty: Provides 10% reduced damage taken for the companion, active as long as it’s alive and returning quickly after death.
Some other useful support options include:
Blind Support: Causes the companion to blind enemies on hit.
Shock Effect Gems: Particularly effective with beasts that deal shock damage.
The strength of a companion largely depends on the modifiers it inherits from the rare beast. Some of the most useful effects include:
All Damage Can Shock: Guarantees a 20% shock on hit, regardless of the damage dealt.
Elemental Resistance Aura
Physical Damage Aura
Haste Aura
Energy Shield Aura
Trail Effects: Such as Trail of Fire, Trail of Chill, or Shocked Ground, useful for builds like Twister or Windspear.
Hinder Aura and Temporal Bubble: Great for slowing enemies.
These effects apply globally and can benefit a wide variety of builds. Beasts with guaranteed on-hit effects like ignite, poison, or bleed are also valuable for condition-based builds.
There are two main zones where you can efficiently farm for rare beasts:
Infested Barrows (Troubled Camp): Offers two rare beasts per instance, making it the better choice for faster farming.
Jungle Ruins (Troubled Camp): Contains only one rare but often features Quadrillas, which are tanky and have strong leap slam attacks.
To farm effectively:
Enter the zone and locate the Troubled Camp (usually at the map's edge).
Avoid killing the rare beasts if you want to reset their modifiers.
Use "Respawn at Checkpoint" from the main menu to refresh the nearby rare beasts. This only works if the beasts are left alive.
If you accidentally kill them, reset the entire zone by control-clicking the entrance or waypoint.
Repeat the process until you find a beast with favorable modifiers. Most rare beasts will have 2 to 4 modifiers, and the goal is to find a combination that benefits your build.
Don’t over-optimize early: If your build doesn’t rely on a specific ground effect or aura, any moderately useful beast will work.
Look for empowered modifiers: Some beasts carry enhanced versions of typical mods. For example, a Mana Siphon beast might also include shocked ground in its empowered form.
Save time by farming early: Right after acquiring the Tame Beast gem in Act 3 is a great time to start capturing beasts using these reset methods.
Companions follow you even at high movement speeds. They teleport to your location if they get too far and generally stay close enough to be useful in combat. Some beasts, like Quadrillas, are better at staying on enemies due to their leap slam attacks.
Tame Beast companions can be leveled by using higher-level uncut gems. You can recapture new beasts at any time by cutting a new gem and capturing another rare. While only one companion can be active at once, you can swap between them freely.
