Path of Exile 2 introduces permanent buffs through the Venom Draught system, which can have a lasting impact on your character. These buffs are obtained during Act 3 and Act 6 and cannot be changed once selected. Unlike some mechanics in Path of Exile 1, where expensive resources allowed for adjustments, these choices are irreversible in PoE 2.
Making the wrong decision can lead to difficulties later in the game, so it's important to take the time to evaluate which option benefits your build the most. Below, we'll discuss the options available and how to approach choosing the best one for your class.
During your playthrough, you will come across the Venom Well, which grants a special Venom Draught when turned into an NPC. This buff is permanent for that character and provides different advantages depending on the choice made.
The first Venom Draught choice in Act 3 is less impactful, but the second one in Act 6 can have a major influence on your build’s effectiveness. Since these buffs are permanent, picking the wrong one could lead to limitations in your endgame performance.
There are two opportunities to obtain a Venom Draught - once in Normal Difficulty (Act 3) and again in Cruel Difficulty (Act 6). The buffs provided differ between these two encounters.
1. Venom Draught of Stone - Increases your Stun Threshold by 25%
It helps against enemies that frequently stun, and useful for tanky or melee builds that take a lot of hits.
2. Venom Draught of the Veil - Increases Elemental Ailment Threshold by 30%
This venom draught reduces the chance and duration of being Frozen, Shocked, Ignited, or other ailments, so it is good for builds that struggle with elemental debuffs.
3. Venom Draught of Clarity - +25% Mana Regeneration Rate
This is great for mana-heavy builds like spellcasters or those using Mind Over Matter, and a reliable choice for most characters.
1. Venom Draught of Chaos - +10% Chaos Resistance
It helps mitigate Chaos damage, which is harder to resist through gear, useful for builds that take Chaos damage frequently. It can be wasted if your build eventually becomes immune to Chaos damage.
2. Venom Draught of Attributes - +5 to All Attributes (Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence)
This one helps meet stat requirements for gear and skill gems, provides flexibility in passive skill allocation. So it is a strong choice for builds that lack Strength, Dexterity, or Intelligence.
3. Venom Draught of Evasion - Reduces Slowing Potency of Debuffs by 15%
It reduces the impact of movement and attack speed slow effects, and very helpful for maintaining mobility in fights. But it is less useful for builds that are not movement-dependent.
For most builds, Venom Draught of Clarity (+25% Mana Regeneration) is the safest option. Mana sustain is a common issue, and this buff helps ensure smoother gameplay, especially for casters and Mind Over Matter builds.
However, if your build struggles with stuns or elemental ailments, consider:
Venom Draught of Stone (for Stun Resistance) if you frequently get stunned.
Venom Draught of the Veil (for Elemental Ailment Resistance) if ailments are a problem.
This decision is more impactful, as it will influence your endgame performance. The best option depends on your build:
Pick +5 to All Attributes if: You need more Strength, Dexterity, or Intelligence to equip gear or use skill gems. You want flexibility in passive skill tree allocation. Your build benefits from a small stat boost across multiple attributes.
Pick +10% Chaos Resistance if: Your build struggles against Chaos damage. You do not plan to use a passive or unique item that makes you immune to Chaos damage. You want extra survivability against Chaos-heavy enemies.
Pick -15% Slowing Potency if: You play a mobility-focused build reliant on movement speed. You struggle against enemies that apply slow effects. You want to maintain attack speed and movement speed in fights.
If you are unsure which option will serve your build best, it is possible to delay the decision. After completing the quest, turn in the Venom Well, but do not select a buff immediately. This way, you can wait until later in the game when you have a clearer idea of what your build needs.
By the time you reach level 90 or higher, you will have a better understanding of whether you need Chaos resistance, additional stats, or mana sustain. Holding off on this choice prevents potential regrets and ensures you select the most beneficial buff for your build.
